I was contacted yesterday by a friends sister regarding doing some portraits of her baby. She wanted some photographs of her 5 month old, Jenson. I was more than happy to oblige as I haven't done many baby portraits recently. We arranged to meet at her sisters house, where I had previously done shots of her niece a couple of years ago.
I arrived in less than great weather in the afternoon, after going in and having a quick chat, I decided that shooting with natural light in the conservatory was the best plan for these shots. Strobe studio lighting can be irritating for babies, so i was keen to keep Baby Jenson as happy as possible. As a baby photographer you have to adapt to the moods of babies very quickly so it was important to shoot quickly and catch him whilst happy.
I was able to use blankets and cushions that were around in the house to my advantage. I love to add texture to backgrounds of images rather than just the basic backgrounds. Using mum (Zella) as a prop to make sure Jenson didn't fall over and to keep his attention, I was able to capture some fantastic shots. Black and white images are great of babies, however having seen the multicoloured blanket they had, I couldn't help but sneak a couple of colour shots in too.
Here are my favourite shots from the shoot:
I have recently reduced my portrait session price to £100 which includes a free print. I am available for portrait sessions pretty much any day of the week, and I will try to fit around you. Baby portraits need to be planned carefully to be shot when your baby is at its happiest. You will know when the best time is, so bear this in mind before booking a time.
